ENGLAND, John David, 59, of Chesterfield, formerly of Hopewell City and Surry County, died unexpectedly of a heart attack Monday evening, Aug. 15, 2011. He was born Dec. 3, 1951, to the late Thomas Matthew England Sr. and Lucy Elizabeth Stainback England. John David is survived by his wife, Clissa Spratlin England; his three daughters, Elspeth Alma, Leatha Ellen, and Emmalyne Joyce England; his brother, Thomas Matthew England Jr.; two sisters, Lucy Elizabeth England Woessner and Susan England Lester; and many nieces and nephews. A beloved history teacher, soccer and volleyball coach, John taught at the Appomattox Regional Governor’s School in Petersburg. His dedication in supporting his students was second only to his role as a father who was very involved in his daughters’ lives as a coach and teacher. John shared his love of being a DIY person by working part-time at Home Depot on Broad Street near Horsepen Road. John graduated from Hopewell High School in 1969 and from Virginia Military Institute in 1973. The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Friday, Aug. 19, at the Nelsen Funeral Home, 214 N. 6th Ave., Hopewell. A service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 20, at First Presbyterian Church, 1107 W. Broadway, Hopewell, where John and his family were longtime members. A reception will follow the service at the church. Internment will be at 2:15 p.m. in the Claremont Town Cemetery in Surry County.
